Guide on cleaning fine sterling silver jewelry with baking soda
2010-07-02 17:47:00
Do you feel headache with your tarnished fine sterling silver jewelry? You can clean it easily at home with normal baking soda. Baking soda activated by boiling water in the presence of aluminum, will dislodge the tarnish by making it bind with the aluminum, leaving the sterling silver clean and shiny again.
Polish your jewelry with a soft cloth. If your jewelry has become slightly tarnished, attempt to polish it with a cloth made of cotton. If there is stubborn tarnish, now you can use baking soda to solve them.
Cover the inside bottom of a glass heat proof dish and place a piece of aluminum foil, shiny side up inside it. Put the tarnished silver in the bottom of the dish. Boil just enough water to submerge all of the sterling silver pieces. With a wood or plastic utensil, gently move the pieces around to ensure that all of the silver surfaces come in contact with the aluminum.
The tarnish will gradually collect on the aluminum foil and clean the sterling. Rinse the silver jewelry under tap water. To ensure that you don't lose small pieces like earrings and pendants, put a sieve over the drain to catch whatever may slip off your fingers.
At last gently wipe the pieces with an absorbent towel and polish with a soft cloth.
