The difference between Akoya pearls and other pearls

Akoya pearls are undoubtedly the best known and most pervasive of the family of saltwater cultured pearls. The color will range from body color from white, cream and some yellow, pink, blue, may have rose or green overtone. The luster will be from excellent, good to fair. The surface is ranging from clean, lightly blemished to moderately blemished. The nacre will be from thick, medium to thin. With these characteristics, Akoya pearls still have differences from other pearls, these differences will be the following aspects:
1. The pearls we saw on the pearl market are often cultured pearls. There are two basic kinds of cultured pearls - saltwater and freshwater. Saltwater cultured pearls usually come from the Akoya pearl oyster. They take longer to develop and are more expensive than freshwater cultured pearls.
2. Akoya pearls have a nacre coating while the freshwater won't. The nacre coating of Japanese Akoya pearls about a half-millimeter. While The nacre coating of Tahitian pearls-about 2 to 3 millimeters. South Sea pearls develop the thickest-from 2 to 6 millimeters.
3. . The size of the Tahitian pearls is large, starting at 8mm and can range up to the huge 14mm. The south sea pearls typically measure anywhere between 10mm to 20mm in diameter. While the size of Aloya pearl is ranging from 2mm to 1o mm. The sizes are generally smaller than south sea pearls. Large sized pearls are rare.
4. The shape of Akoya pearls will be 70% to 80% round or near-round, 20% to 30% baroque and semi-baroque. While the shape of Tahitian pearls will be 40% round and near-round, 20% oval, button and drop, 40% baroque and semi-baroque. And the shape of south sea pearls will be 10% to 30% round and near round, 40% to 60% oval, button and drop, 20% to 40% baroque and semi-baroque.
