Repairing guide on flat gold necklace
2010-07-07 17:39:00
The delicate design of this type of necklace is easily broken. Few things are worse than breaking a piece of gold jewelry. With a few rudimentary tools, you can repair a flat gold snake necklace yourself.
If your flat gold necklace has breakage, you will need to solder it.
Cut the gold solder with the wire nippers into tiny chips around a millimeter in size.
Arrange the broken pieces of the flat gold necklace lay flat on the ceramic soldering board.
Use the tweezers to place the pieces to fit together.
Mix a tablespoon of borax flux with a couple of drops of water, just enough to form a watery paste.
Apply the flux paste to the joints of the gold necklace with a paintbrush to be soldered together. The flux paste will cause the melted solder to flow evenly onto the necklace.
Start heating the solder gently from a distance with the soldering gun. Heat the solder chips from a distance so they don't blow off the necklace.
Move the soldering gun closer to the gold as the flux turns clear. The solder will heat and slump before it will flow together onto any metal it is touching.
Let the gold necklace cool, then pick it up with the tweezers and place it in the pickle solution.
Leave the gold necklace to sit in the pickle solution until all the flux is dissolved before removing, rinsing and drying it.
